SKARGA Piotr - Sermons of the Sejm (Treasures of the National Library)

add Your note
Lot description Show orginal version

The work was written in 1597. A collection of sermons that is an evocative description of the situation of the Republic "consumed by numerous diseases." It contains 8 sermons that were never preached (the sermons of Skarga - considered in the 19th century almost as a prophet foretelling the fall of the First Republic - are referred to in Jan Matejko's painting "Skarga's Sermon"). They contain the most important demands for the reform of the state, and are directed against reformist ideas. Skarga opts for strong royal power, which is to be a guarantor of the primacy of the Catholic Church. He opts for limiting the role of the Sejm in favor of the Senate. He criticizes the nobility's anarchy and selfishness and impunity for sins such as murder and oppression of peasants.

In "Sejm Sermons" there are many biblical comparisons, the work is saturated with many rhetorical figures. Skarga's style became a model for later Polish preaching

Elegant sewn edition, bound in imitation leather, with gilding.
