P. Skarga'sAnnual Church History is a translation into Polish of the Yearbooks of the Church (Latin: Annales ecclesiastici) by Cesare Baronius (1538-1607), an Italian cardinal and prominent Church historian. Baronius' monumental 12-volume work presents the history of the Church from the birth of Christ to the end of the 12th century. It was a Counter-Reformation replica to the Magdeburg Centuries, i.e. the Church history compiled somewhat earlier by Lutheran authors. The Yearbooks until the19th century were often considered the best history of the Church. Skarga, adapting this work to native soil, also aimed to combat heresy in the Republic. Although he threatened Polish dissenters with unspecified punishments in the Annals, in practice he advocated limited tolerance (recognizing it as a temporary solution, after all). Only the present 1607 edition is comprehensive and includes all 12 volumes of Baronius' work (the 1603 edition included only 10). It also includes a letter from Primate Karnkowski to Cesare Baronio and two letters from Baronio to Karnkowski and Skarga (in Latin). On the title page, a 1608 ownership entry from the Franciscan Order of the Reformati (still located at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Warsaw): "pro Refectorio Conventus Varsaviensis P. P. Reformatorum ad S. Antonium Padvanum anno 1608."

Wear to the binding (especially the corners); on the title page, small corner losses filled in, a few pages with minor under-gluing and repairs without damage to the text, the last 8 last pages of the regester are missing, traces of minor dampstaining and browning, soiling. Overall a nice piece.
