[SIENKIEWICZ Henryk]. Handwritten letter from Henryk Sienkiewicz to the translator Bernard Szarlitt in Vienna, dated. 15 I 1908.
Double-sided manuscript on arc, 17.3x11 cm, second sheet blank. Sienkiewicz apologizes for the delay in the correspondence, explains it by his desire to send the letter along with the promised article (he sent it in a separate envelope). He is probably referring to the article "Prussia and Europe" published in "Österreichische Rundschau" on February 1, 1908. According to information in "Nowy Korbut" (vol. 17***, p. 193), the article was translated into German by B. Szarlitt, to whom the letter is addressed (the addressee's name on the envelope reads "Charlitt") and who collaborated with the "Österreichische Rundschau". Sienkiewicz also mentions that he wrote back to Karol Glossy (this letter is preserved in the National Library in Vienna). The correspondence ends with expressions of respect and Sienkiewicz's Warsaw address (Hoża 22). Envelope stained and rubbed, minor ink stains to letter, abrasion on fold.
