On the basis of historical accounts, documents, diaries, memoirs and private records, the author recreates a fascinating, bloody, yet little known in our country fragment of Japanese history called the Meiji Revolution.
The Shinsengumi was a notorious as well as controversial police force, stationed in Kyoto of the end of the Edo era. Known for its simultaneous devotion to the shogunate and cruelty to its opponents, it still evokes mixed feelings today. In the Japanese consciousness, however, he has become enshrined as primarily a symbol of the departed world of samurai, warriors who value honor more than their own (and others') lives.
