Daniel Sennert (1572 - 1637) - German physician and academician, longtime professor at the University of Wittenberg. Born in Breslau as the son of a Silesian shoemaker, he studied at the University of Wittenberg. He published many popular books not only on medicine but also on alchemy and chemistry, and was distinguished for his contributions to the development of atomic theory. He was the author of one of the first descriptions of scarlet fever. He served on the faculty of the University of Wittenberg until the end of his life. He served six times as dean of the medical faculty at Wittenberg, and was the physician to many aristocrats and rulers, including John George I, Elector of Saxony. He died of the plague in 1637 in Wittenberg.
