The Catcher in the Rye is a novel by American writer J.D. Salinger, first published in 1951. Soon after its publication it became one of the most stigmatized books in the United States. The book was controversial due to, among other things, its dealing with themes of underage sexuality and the use of vulgarities by the main character.
Although it was originally published as a book for adult readers, it is now on the high school and college reading lists in all English-speaking countries. It has been translated into almost every major language in the world. It is estimated that about 250,000 pieces of Catcher in the Rye are sold worldwide each year, which amounts to about 65 million pieces sold since its publication. It was included in Time magazine's list of the 100 best books published between 1923 and 2005. In a poll of the one hundred best English-language novels of the 20th century, compiled by the Modern Library Publishing House, it ranked 64th.
