S. Wasylewski (1885-1953) - author of more than 20 excellent books devoted mainly to Polish customs and the history of Polish culture. As Krzysztof Masłoń stated: "Because he wrote about history engagingly, he was fought against by historians." In this book, the author introduces the reader to the sometimes dangerous world of medieval monasteries, folk legends and superstitions with great swagger and humor. Individual chapters are titled: In the year of our Lord 1001, About the Sisters and Brothers of St. Norbert, About the Breakfasted Cistercians and the Black Benedictines, About the Nightingale of Assisi and the Ladies of the Wawel Court, Among the Ivy of the Sacred Legend, Fighting Satan, Life behind bars, Struggle with a man, Farming on the land, garden and sea, Hospital, pharmacy, court of God, Piast of Polish civilization, When two centuries passed, "Destroy the monasteries", Rebellion of the renegades, Polish nuns against the Reformation. At the end an extensive bibliography for each chapter. The first book illustrated with original woodcuts by Wladyslaw Skoczylas.
