The novel, published in 1984 in the second circulation, became one of the most famous Polish entries of the 1980s. On the one hand it aroused admiration, on the other it became the object of attacks, especially from the authorities of the time. The author was expelled from the Polish Academy of Sciences for its publication.
The story is set at the beginning of martial law. At the boarding house of Mrs. Aniela, on Lake Wigry, a group of intellectuals spends their vacation, making their time pleasant with conversations. One of the characters and at the same time the narrator is the writer - Mr. Mareczek, who spins the story in a humorous and ironic manner. The subjects of their conversations are both ordinary everyday matters and political-philosophical problems concerning communism, the meaning of history and the future.
