Robert Gorzkowski
Receipts and wages,
serfdom duties,
Statutory and hired labor, charwages,
rents - related to the manor and the countryside
The latest popular science publication by Robert Gorzkowski has appeared on the publishing market. It is a compendium of knowledge concerning settlements between the landowner and the peasant working for the lord. The publication is divided into: constructive criticism, duties of peasants, Polish beginnings and alcohol, meadows, forests, industrial plants, szarwark and ends in People's Poland. The thoroughness of the descriptions, along with the presentation of source documents and tokens or settlement wages, makes it easier for the reader to group knowledge and also clearly explains the landlord-peasant relationship.
The work aims to provide an overview of obligations and receipts from the 16th century and ends with the agrarian reform and the deprivation of landowners of their estates after World War II carried out under the PKWN decree of September 6, 1944. Its purpose is to outline and systematize the phenomenon. The topic is very difficult due to the not entirely legal procedure of issuing vouchers and payment tokens (skipping the 1860s). Through the decades and different regimes freely presented and interpreted. The biggest problem in developing the topic is the sparse source material.
The work organizes the nomenclature of the following credentials in order to classify them properly and concerns:
- "assygnations"; tickets, vouchers, deputations, receipts, marks, reverses, "sola wexle", bills of exchange, receipts for wealthy days, walking and continuous days, vouchers, e.g. for: scythe, plow, cart;
- all documents: printed, minted, burned, melted and inscribed
by hand and with descriptions: "the change is due", "from the cassa porat" or "accepted for cash" etc.
