"On a cloudy October noon, a reserve of the Caucasian Horse Division, consisting of several sotnias of the Dagestan and Kabardino regiments, bivouacked in the cemetery and convent yard of the Ruthenian nuns in Mikuliczyn. From dawn, in a murderous battle, the Cherokee fought the Austrian brigade, which, escaping the pursuit of the Caucasian cavalry - managed to fortify itself on the slopes of the mountains - in fierce resistance covering the roads leading deep into Hungary. Inside the old wooden Orthodox church, which had been turned into a dressing station, the wounded were carried off and brought down in horse-drawn carriages. By the wall surrounding the cemetery, maimed, overweight horses munched hay, and Chechens and Kabardians in shaggy papas, black burqas, with silver kajals at their belts - with crooked sabers at their sides, chattering and smoking cigarettes, wandered around the courtyard."
