A two-volume textbook on the practice of medicine by Lazare Riviere, a prominent 17th century physician. In seventeen chapters, the author provides advice on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of successive body systems - from the head and chest to women's diseases and rheumatism.
Lazare Rivière (1589 - 1655) was a French physician, professor at the University of Montpellier and personal physician to King Louis XIII. He specialized in anatomy and surgery. He was the first physician in history to describe aortic valve inflammation. He also had a great interest in pharmacology. He created many different mixtures that he used as medicines in his practice. Particularly famous became his concoction for the treatment of venereal diseases called "Potio Rivierii, whose main ingredient was burdock. It was used as a remedy for centuries to come.
