A novella by Edgar Allan Poe, set on Sullivan's Island (South Carolina), dealing with the solving of an encrypted message and the search for buried treasure. The story was first published in the pages of Philadelphia's Dollar Newspaper in June 1843, after Poe won a contest announced by the newspaper, receiving a prize of $100.
