The plot of the novel is based on little-known historical material from the period of the Swedish invasion. It speaks of both weighty matters, political problems of the time, solved by the crowned heads, and romantic love adventures, battles, invasions, duels. The protagonists are historical figures - King John Casimir, Maria Louisa - as well as representatives of the magnates, nobility, bourgeoisie, serfs' peasants.
The author vividly describes the turbulent fate of the "losers" - people who, despite their efforts, failed to keep Ducal Prussia attached to Poland.
