Biography of Jan Olbracht published in 1936. The author, an eminent historian, emphasizes in his work the life and reign of Olbracht in the context of domestic and foreign policy. He describes his childhood, education and struggle for the throne after the death of Casimir IV Jagiellon.
The author devotes special attention to domestic reforms. He describes the Petrograd Sejm of 1493 and its influence on the formation of the parliamentary system. He analyzes Olbracht's policy toward Prussia and Lithuania. He also focuses on preparations for the battle against Turkey and the Tartars. He devotes much space to the unsuccessful Moldavian expedition of 1497, which weakened Poland's position.
The book is based on extensive source material. Papee uses archival documents and chronicles, analyzing both the successes and mistakes of the ruler. He shows Olbracht as an ambitious king who made important decisions, but not always effective ones.The author received the PAU's Barczewski Prize for this work.
