Painting the Ten Commandments. The work of Stefan GIEROWSKI

Stefan Gierowski (1925-2022) - painter, illustrator. An outstanding representative of the modern avant-garde of painting, referred to as a classic of Polish modernity.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow from 1945-48 in the studios of Zbigniew Pronaszko and Karol Frycz. At the same time, he studied art history at Jagiellonian University under Wojslaw Mole. Since 1949, he lived in Warsaw. In 1956-61 he cooperated with the Krzywe Koło Gallery run by Marian Bogusz. From 1962 to 1996 he taught at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he served as dean of the Faculty of Painting from 1975-81, and was elected rector-elect in 1983. The martial law authorities firmly rejected this candidacy. In the 1980s he was associated with the "independent culture" circle. In 1986 he received the title of full professor.

In 1981, he was a member of the Organizing Committee of the Congress of Polish Culture. In 1980 he received the Jan Cybis Award. (Source: culture.pl)

The publication "Painting the Ten Commandments" is a monograph focusing on Stefan Gierowski's series under the same title. It takes the form of a compilation of academic, press and journalistic texts, as well as interviews with the author himself. The excerpts included in the commentaries to individual works are an attempt to read the Decalogue anew, to bring closer the formal issues of Gierowski's works, such as the meaning of color or any difficulties in rendering content in non-figurative painting. They dispel the viewer's doubts, suggest possible interpretations and pose new questions for the viewer. The graphic design of the book was done by Lukasz Dybalski.

The volume includes color plates depicting Gierowski's work.
