The most successful editorial enterprise in Poland up to the end of the 19th century, and few equals even later. Samuel Orgelbrand [1810-1868] engaged the most prominent Polish scholars and writers to carry out his project, which took 10 years to compile. a huge number of, mostly elaborate entries, often taking the form of small articles. S. Orgelbrand's encyclopedia contains numerous entries, including personal entries, for Old Polish history and for general history, which in later editions of various works of this nature were no longer included or had a truncated form, making the work of an outstanding bookseller, publisher and antiquarian like S. Orgelbrand an invaluable source of handy knowledge.
