Co-founder of modern German poetry, defender of the purity of the German language; court historiographer of King Wladyslaw IV Vasa and his secretary. He was born in Boleslawiec in Silesia. For German poetry he played a role as great as that of Jan Kochanowski earlier in Poland. He was closely connected with the traditions of Polish Protestantism, with a Calvinist and Arian atmosphere. It is worth mentioning that his circle of friends included the famous Piotr Kruger of Danzig, an astronomer.
