Cover rubbed, leather on spine slightly rubbed in several places, spine lettering partially obliterated, traces of dampness in margins of pages, glued loss of margin of two plates (after pp. 12 and 256), small tears in margins of several pages, otherwise good condition. Few handwritten notes. A lavishly illustrated account of travels in the East Indies and Ceylon. In the text, 2 full-page portraits, 55 copperplate illustrations (including full-page illustrations), on 34 double-page plates views and plans of cities, maps; 3 plates contain examples of the handwriting used in Ceylon. The decorative frontispiece shows wild animals and natives displaying Ceylonese goods: ivory, cinnamon, fruits, valuables. The author of the book is a Dutch minister and pastor who traveled through the described region with the Dutch army taking possession of Ceylon. He described in detail the natural conditions, the life of the inhabitants, customs and religious rituals. After spending several years on the island, he returned to the Netherlands, where he died at the age of 39.
