First Polish edition illustrated with lithographs of "Historical Songs" by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, edition
much rarer than earlier publications!
Lit. by A. Banach, Polish illustrated book, item 411.
Created at the request of the Society of Friends of Science. "Śpiewy historyczne" was the author's most famous work and also one of the most popular Polish books of the 19th century. They constitute poetic songs in which the author idealized the most important moments and figures of Polish history, with emphasis on crowned rulers.
Next to each song a table of notes and a lithograph (by K. Auer, among others) made in the lithographic works of M. Jablonski in Lviv and A. Witeka in Prague.
At the end an appendix by Joachim Lelewel "Śpiewyhistoryczne Juliana Ursyna Niemcewicza pod względem histori uważane".
Condition DB+/ browned paper and rust spots in places, otherwise good condition.
Ownership stamp: "Lesko Castle Library" (owned by the Krasicki family from 1799 to 1939).
