A Sanskrit epic whose surviving versions date from the 4th century BC to the 2nd century AD. Its authorship is attributed to the legendary poet Valmiki. Originally recited at courts, the work acquired religious significance over time, as the main character Rama came to be regarded as an avatar (divine incarnation) of the god Vishnu. The paraphrase of the Ramayana into Hindi by R. Tulsidas (Tulsi) titled Ramaćaritmanas (The Lake of Rama's Deeds), written in the 16th century, became particularly important, making the Ramayana a sacred book of Hinduism, especially for followers of Krishna, Vishnuites, the bhakti movement and others. It has had a significant impact on the literature and art of Indo-China and Indonesia.
The modern prose retelling of the Indian epic was translated by Kalina Wojciechowska.
