The history of the Imperial Guard covers that militarily rich period beginning in 1800 and ending in 1815, that is, from its creation under the name of the Consular Guard until its dismissal, on the banks of the Loire. , as the Imperial Guard.
In a thorough and complete outline, the author of this work begins to put before the reader's eyes a faithful picture of the character, customs and mores of the soldiers of the Guard. He then proceeds to the formation and formation of this elite troop, pointing out its method of recruitment and promotion; its internal administration, its privileges and attributes in the person of the Emperor; its pay and allowances on a war and peace basis; its discipline and barracks; its numerical and subsequent strength in the various phases and wars of the Empire, by its various arms. MARCO de SAINT-HILAIRE drew up synoptic tables listing the names of all the officers of each regiment of the Guard with an indication of their rank and seniority, from colonel to the last lieutenant. In addition, he reproduced the texts of decrees, orders, letters of service, etc. relating to the Guard. The author then gives a year-by-year historical summary, enriched by anecdotes reported on the spot by Guard veterans, from expeditions in which the Guard corps (young and old) took an active part between 1800 and 1815. The author believed that he was glorifying the homeland itself, its former army and its present army, in order to pay this belated but solemn tribute to that Old Imperial Guard, which left indestructible traces of honor and courage in its passage through all points of Europe, and whose echoes of the Pyramids and the Alps, the Escorial and the Kremlin still echo the marvelous prowess and warrior virtues.
The portraits, views of places, military scenes and, above all, the magnificent set of hand-painted military uniforms and portraits of the Imperial Guard were entrusted to the talent of one of our first military artists and illustrators, Messrs. BELLANGE, LAMY, MOREN and NOMINAR.
