"Rome. Portraits and Sketches" by Kazimierz Morawski is a collection of essays, concerning ancient Rome. The book covers a variety of topics related to the history and culture of this great empire, including portraits of such figures as Emperor Tiberius, Claudius Julian the Apostate, relations between Romans and Germans during the decline of the Roman state, and a description of religious practices such as prayer in ancient Rome.
The author of the book is Kazimierz Morawski (1852-1925) - a prominent Polish classical philologist, historian and professor and rector of the Jagiellonian University. Morawski, known for his in-depth knowledge of Roman rhetoric and Roman history, was also president of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and a candidate for the office of President of Poland. Decorated with the Order of the White Eagle, he left behind a significant scholarly output, including not only ancient history and literature, but also the history of Polish culture.
