From the introduction: Scouting in the English is a new school of physical, ethical and intellectual education, not by ancient or medieval pedagogy, which squeezed the development of all mankind into an artificial framework, but by a pedagogy which, for human development, seeks natural ways in the proper upbringing of the child, consistent with the general human instinct of self-preservation. Scouting is not any sport or pastime, the purpose of which is to lullaby a lazy boy by the campfire and camping, but a return to nature, which does not know what weakness or fear is, the delight of taste or warmth by a home fire, the convenience of gas, electricity and water supply, the sybaritism of mattresses and springs, electric and gasoline cars, in a word, those pleasures and comforts that civilization has invented in metropolitan human groups.
