The diary documents the events of one year of the writer's life, from August 1, 1987 to July 30, 1988.The title was taken by the author from the work "Year of the Hunter" by the writer Vladimir Korsak. It can also be understood metaphorically. In the introduction, Milosz writes: "My game was the whole visible world and I devoted my life to trying to capture it with words or hit it with words." In a footnote years later, he states that "The Year of the Hunter" is "an experimental diary, limited to one year, which, however, escaped the rules and this literary genre, increasingly filling itself with names recalled from memory. The book in its second part turns into a kind of environmental novel, into a series of portraits of my contemporaries, literary and theater people."
