TheWitches of Salem (English: The Crucible) - a 1952 drama by American author Arthur Miller based on the witchcraft trials that took place in 1692 in the town of Salem. The play had its world premiere on Broadway on January 22, 1953. At the time, it won the Tony Award for best play of the year. The drama is an allegorical response to Maccartism, prevalent in the US in the 1950s.
