(Polish 1st ed.). Cracovie 1519. impressus ... Joannis Haller. (21.5 x 16 cm), pp. 92, [1], (title page in woodcut, initials, and finalik), period leather binding.
(Estr. T. 13). Title page in woodcut bordure, Haller's emblem in the upper part, while in the middle Lodz coat of arms with bishop's attributes. "This is the work of Nicholas of Blonie, whom the publisher nowhere mentions here. Ded. Piotr Tomicki by the publisher Rudolf Agricola the younger, dated in Krak. r. 1518" (Estreicher). A work from the Cracow outhouse of Jan Haller (1467 - 1525), owner of a printing house in Cracow, publisher of about 300 books of the highest editorial level. The Treatise on the Sacraments, despite numerous editions (36 editions by the end of the 16th century), was printed only twice (according to Estreicher) in Krakow (1519, Haller and 1529, Scharffenberg). The offered "Treatise on the Sacraments" was written by order of Bishop Stanislaw Ciołek around 1430, intended for the clergy of the Diocese of Poznan. By special order of the bishop, parish priests were obliged to have a copy of the treatise. Nicholas, writing the treatise, tried to bypass the complexities of a scholastic-canonist nature, and showed extensive erudition and knowledge of the laws. He emphasizes the distinctiveness of Polish customs, marks his individuality, mentions his studies at the Univ. of Krak. The treatise on sacraments enjoyed considerable popularity in Poland, as well as abroad. Mikolaj of Blonie, known as Pszczółka (d. before 1448), canonist and preacher. He came from Blonie near Pruszkow near Warsaw. He studied law at the Univ. of Krak where he later taught. From 1422 to 1427 he held the position of royal chaplain. During this time he became close to the diplomat and politician under chancellor Stanisław Ciołek, after whose consecration as bishop of Poznań in 1428, he became his chaplain and moved to Poznań. Rudolf Agricola (d. 1521 in Cracow), assistant professor at the University of Cracow, poet, humanist and publisher. Binding repaired and partially restored, buckle marks, abrasions, no loss or damage to leather. The decorations of the binding partly effaced, imprinted on the binding images of St. Peter, St. Paul, Moses et al. and the date 1538; fresh boards; on the title page early owner's entry and the date 1623. Pages with traces of non-moisture and stains, early marginalia. Extremely valuable Cracow printing, maintained at the high level of scholarship of the time, giving important clues to the history of Polish canon law, as well as the history of printing in Poland. Very scarce.
