As Prof. Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz writes about the importance of this publication in the introduction: the memoirs of Stanislaw August illustrate the complicated fate of their author. We are dealing here with a unique work in many respects, if only because there are few authentic memoirs of rulers in history. King began writing the memoirs in 1771 wrote intermittently, returning to it several times. In them he wanted to show not so much his life, but the history of Poland, and against its background his history and his reasons. (...) The memoirs are a passionate read. They have elements of a sentimental novel (the affair with Catherine), sensationalism (adventures in travel, the kidnapping of the king), customs and social trivia, gossip and gossip from the upper classes, but their value lies in something else. First of all, they show an incredibly rich panorama of Europe and the Republic of the Enlightenment (...).
