"In life we often meet with other people. These encounters are of a very different nature. Often they leave a barely noticeable trace. Sometimes, however, they have a very deep impact, and their influence on us for very many years and even for the rest of our lives. Doctors, nurses and paramedics very often meet other people because of their work. In recent years, unfortunately, we have been hearing a lot of criticism about the attitude of health care workers toward the sick. It is probably fair to say that something has really deteriorated in these relationships. It seems that, as in other areas of our lives, the cult of money has contributed to this. In the health service, this is deeply objectionable and unacceptable. The facts can sometimes be very painful, and commitment to the fate of the patient is often replaced by routine and haste. Of course, this does not apply to all health professionals. Observing the current situation, I reached back to the memories of my youth. They are based on my authentic experiences from the days when I learned medicine from my professors. Their teaching of medical ethics did not consist only of lectures, but took place by example at the patient's bedside in the clinic. Also in the lecture hall in lectures of fields such as internal medicine or surgery. The presentation of patients during the lecture was done with great sensitivity and delicacy. The patients were happy to be chosen for the presentation, as they were able to learn many things about their illness in the process." (excerpt from the Introduction)
