On the frontispiece page of volume I, the author's dedication to Jan Poratyński (1876-1941), Polish pharmacist, social activist: "To Dr. Jan Poratyński Much merited in the defense of Polishness in eastern Galicia in memory of joint efforts. 22/11 1921. author."
Condition: -good. Tucked (with paper) crack in front pastedown, back pastedown with tear and strong loosening of joining of block to binding. Some small undercuts in lead and pen notes (rarely). Some tears on pages. Small loss of bottom margin of pages in vol. 2. Damage to one page in vol. II (without damage to text).
Attached to the item is the "Calendar of the Defenders of Lviv" for 1919, published by the Civic Committee of Polish Women in Lviv. The calendar dedicated to "those who sacrificed their young blood in defense of the borderland city". Pp. [48]; il. Height: 11 cm.
Defense of Lviv, also known as the "Battle for Lviv," a Polish-Ukrainian armed confilct that lasted from November 1, 1918 until May 22, 1919. It ended with the remoteness of the Ukrainian army from the territory of Lviv and the surrounding area and the regaining of control of the city by the Poles.
Czeslaw Mączyński (1881-1935) - Polish teacher, historian, artillery colonel of the Polish Army. Mączyński served as commander-in-chief of the defense of Lviv in November 1918, and was a member of the Supreme Command for the Defense of Lviv. He later served in public office as a politician, a member of the Sejm in 1922-1927. He died in 1935 in Lviv, and was buried in the cemetery of the Defenders of Lviv.
