"James Macpherson (1736 - 1796) - Scottish poet. He became primarily famous as the publisher of the so-called "songs of Ossian," allegedly by a medieval Scottish bard, which manuscript he was to discover and translate into English. From the very beginning there were doubts about the authenticity of the songs, and eventually a special commission was appointed, which, after several years of investigating the case, ruled that Macpherson had not found any manuscript, and that he had written the songs himself based on fragments of Scottish folk legends known to him. This ruling, however, did not affect the popularity of the Songs of Ossian, which strongly influenced romantic imagination and sentimentality, e.g. girls were given the name Malvina (the main female character of the work) [...]" (Wikipedia).
