As there are laws of economics, as there is a law of supply and demand, so there is a law governing Polish politics. Poland's political importance is a function of Russian-German relations. As soon as these relations are bad, Poland's importance grows, Poland regains political independence. When Russian-German relations mend, the independence of Polish politics falls. At the moment of German-Russian political unity of action - Poland's independence dies.
The partition of Poland was preceded by a moment of national revival. The Four-Year Sejm, known as the Great Sejm, concluded an offensive and resilient alliance with Prussia, directed against Russia. This Sejm was able to create an army, a treasury and carry out great political and social reforms. Prussia demands Gdansk and Torun from Poland in exchange for the anti-Russian alliance. Poland refuses. Prussia betrays us, makes a deal with Russia, which crushes Poland, sharing its territory with Prussia and Austria. This story quite closely resembles the recent history before September 1, 1939.

History... attracted and may continue to attract with the colorfulness of the narrative, the accumulation of aptly chosen anecdotal material, the suggestiveness of the judgments, the vividness of the descriptions, the ability to explain even complicated historical processes in a simple, convincing manner. It is hard to imagine that anyone interested in the history of the Second Republic could fail to reach for it.
