Franciszek Karlinski 1830-1906 - Polish astronomer and meteorologist. Graduated from St. Anne's Gymnasium, studied at Jagiellonian University. In 1851-1855 assistant professor pry the Cracow astronomical observatory. The years 1855-62 work at the Charles University in Prague. 1862-1902 director of the Astrological Observatory of the Jagiellonian University. Conducted observations of comets and asteroids, studies of meteorology and variable stars. In 1866, he develops a code used by the whole world to send telegrams about comet discoveries to observatories. Awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, third class. From 1857 a member of the Scientific Society of Cracow. 1866 he was awarded the title of Doctor HONORIS CAUSA of the Jagiellonian University. Son of Leon Karlinski - minister of iron railroads.
