A collection of colorful stories from the life of the nobility settled in the 17th century in the so-called Red Ruthenia. There, in the absence of a strong executive authority, they had to seek justice and defend themselves against violence on their own and by all means.
Although the book deals with the world of more than three hundred years ago, the modern reader will find a lot of familiar phenomena, such as the lack of personal security and the low effectiveness of court judgments.
The first edition of this book was published in 1903 and has seen many reissues.
