JozefSwirysz-Ryszkiewicz was born on May 15, 1888 in Warsaw, died in 1942, a battle painter and soldier.
He learned painting from his father, also an artist, Jozef Ryszkiewicz. The subjects of his paintings were scenes of hunting, battles and depicting rural life. The artist belonged to the group Zespół, established in 1925. He exhibited his works in Warsaw's Zachęta Gallery and the Institute of Art Propaganda (Exhibition of Polish Battle Painting in 1939), among others.
Ryszkiewicz fought in the Polish Legions. He was severely wounded (he suffered from arm paresis). The artist was strongly associated with the soldier community. He served as a recruiting officer in the service of the Supreme National Committee, and later attained the rank of ensign (he worked in the National Enlistment Inspectorate). From 1919, Ryszkiewicz was a reserve captain with seniority and an aide-de-camp to Interior Minister Gen. Kazimierz Sosnkowski. The painter also served as vice-president of the Union of Reserve Officers and the Federation of Polish Union of Defenders of the Fatherland. The artist was awarded, among others, the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Cross of Valor and the French National Order of the Legion of Honor.
