biography and two portraits of an interesting figure, of Polish origin, distinguished for the American army and the development of military technology

ŻALIŃSKI Edmund Ludwik [1849-1909] soldier and inventor, U.S. Army officer, was born in the Prussian partition, in Kórnik (Greater Poland), soon emigrated with his parents to the United States . As a 15-year-old, he joined the US Army as a volunteer to fight during the Civil War on the side of the Union [North]. He invented and developed a pneumatic torpedo gun with an electric fuse, collaborated with John Holland in the construction of submarines, and was the inventor of the folding paddle, the so-called "shovel".
