JAN LAM was a Pole by choice. This is because he was born into the family of an Austrian officer. He took part in the January Uprising. He fought in Dionis Czachowski's unit and reached the rank of captain. He practiced journalism and literature. He is counted among the most colorful figures in the cultural milieu of Lviv in the second half of the 19th century. Among his best novels is The Great World of Capowic; this novel was originally published under the title Panna Emilia in 1869 and signed with the initials N.M. The second edition in 1873 was already published under the title The Great World of Capowic, which became a permanent part of the history of Polish literature.
