"For the sake of truth, and not for the sake of momentary necessity, we have intended to sketch the history of the last years of the Republic's existence - the spirit and custom of Poland. This era has been repeatedly and multifacetedly elaborated by many writers, it has been grasped as an alluring subject, looked at from various sides, tried feathers and jokes on it. Even foreigners, such as Rhuliere, Ferrand, Raumer, Sybel, Smitt, Herrmann, and more recently Beer, took eagerly the moment of Poland's fall and division as a subject for exhaustive works. The number of minor writings, judgments, memoirs, treatises from these times is immeasurably great. The material has been accumulated and is being accumulated every day in such abundance that it could be called too rich, if a historian could be burdened with too much data".
