Kozienice. Wandering through the centuries

add Your note
Lot description Show orginal version

Kozienice was first mentioned in 1206, when it and neighboring villages were granted to the Norbertine convent in Plock. However, these estates were far from Plock, so Kozienice became royal property by way of an exchange and remained so until the partitions. In 1326 the village of Kozienice was transferred to the Magdeburg law by Wladyslaw Lokietek. The village, located on the edge of the Kozienice Forest on the route from Vilnius to Krakow, became one of the favorite hunting grounds of King Wladyslaw Jagiello, who stayed here 10 times. Probably a wooden hunting mansion was also erected here for him, and the king himself founded a church in 1394. The proximity of the Radom Forest and the Vistula River allowed for the construction, under the direction of Master Jaroslaw, of a skate bridge, which, after being floated to Czerwinsk, was used by Polish troops between June 30 and July 3, 1410 to cross during the Great War with the Teutonic Order.

In 1467, at the royal court, Queen Elisabeth Rakuszanka gave birth to a son to King Casimir Jagiellon, later King Sigismund I the Old, which is commemorated to this day by a commemorative column erected in 1518, which is the oldest secular monument in Poland. In 1507 the residents of Kozienice asked for city rights. They waited for them for more than 40 years because it was not until January 8, 1549 that King Zygmunt II August issued a privilege at the Sejm in Piotrków for the governor of the Rus and starosta of Radom Piotr Firlej of Dąbrowica to establish the town on part of the Kozienice land, and in 1550 a second location privilege was issued (compared to the first privilege, it increased the fiscal burden on the townsmen). In 1557 King Sigismund Augustus founded a parish here and endowed a parson, and in 1558 Kozienice was granted a privilege to hold fairs.

In 1764 a salt depot for the entire Radom county was established here, and in 1779 the town was granted a privilege for 12 fairs a year. In 1782 the town, with mostly wooden buildings, was destroyed by fire and, thanks to the king, rebuilt mainly as a brick town. In 1786, King Stanislaw Poniatowski established the Royal Firearms Manufactory in the town , which in 1784-1788 was transformed into theKozienice Arms Factory, which was the largest firearms factory in theRepublic. The factory produced rifles, pistols and rifles, including the first ever mass-produced rifle of Polish design, the so-called Kozienice rifle . The city was practically re-located during this period and gained brick buildings. The reconstruction and rebuilding of the town was handled by Stanislaw August Poniatowski (according to a design byJan Fontana). In 1792, during thePolish-Russian war, the Polish army under the command of Prince Józef Poniatowski stood near Kozienice .

Extremely detailed monograph of the town and its surroundings - from the time of the Jagiellons to the present day. Descriptions of places and their monuments, monographs of famous people, cultural life, description of Kozienice Forest and the local stud farm, sports and recreation in Kozienice and its surroundings, etc.
