"This work, due to its chronicle character, does not aim to value phenomena; it has ambitions of a purely cognitive type: to facilitate orientation in the intricate map of new directions, facts, works and artists in the period of more than one hundred years of art development - 1855-1960 - (impressionism, fauvism, cubism, constructivism, expressionism, dadaism, surrealism, abstractionism and others). Each year contains a range of information relating to the most important art centers in Europe and beyond, highlighting both affinities and distinctiveness in innovative currents and directions emerging at the same time in different places in both hemispheres. Chronologically presented facts in the field of art are accompanied by a selection of the most important political accidents, scientific discoveries, technical inventions and major events in fields related to the visual arts, i.e. literature, theater, film, music. This makes it possible to draw attention to the parallelism of certain phenomena in certain areas of life, or to their mutual dependence (e.g., the influence of the development of optics on impressionist painting, in turn, the influence of this painting on literature; the relationship between expressionism in literature, painting and film; the literary and poetic origin of such trends in art as Dadaism and Surrealism, etc.)" (from the preface).
