Korzeniowski Joseph (born March 19, 1797 in Brody, died. September 17, 1863 in Dresden) - today almost forgotten, read by a narrow circle of researchers, Polish poet, novelist, novella writer and playwright, considered the leading creator of Romantic drama, the most outstanding representative of the Biedermeier novel and a master of narrative; Forerunner of social realism and the psychological novel, father of positivist novella writing, and initiator of the Balzacian social panorama on the ground of Polish literature; some of his minor works bear the marks of black romanticism, where, however, the elements of horror and the uncanny were subordinated to moral teaching in the Catholic spirit. He is placed alongside Aleksander Fredro as the most outstanding comedy writer of the Romantic era. He contributed to the creation of the so-called "character comedy".
