Arthur Koestler was born in 1905 in Budapest to a Hungarian-Jewish merchant family. A sought-after journalist for the German press, he gave up his career in the early 1930s and joined the Communist Party of Germany. He finally broke with it after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and became an uncompromising critic of communism.
