Stains, taped tears of several pages, traces of dampstaining. Owner's signatures on both items, both dated 1894. Two rare late 19th century guides to cabinets of curiosities. The first contains, among other sections: "Rulers, princes [...]. A gallery of human races, operatics and comic scenes. As also a collection of human and animal skeletons," and in it: Standing male bodies with visibly visible viscera from the rear, Sword swallower (at the cash register), Mrs. Dumanche of France with a horn growing on her forehead, Two fused cats, Skeleton of a 36-year-old man, Infernal machine (exact likeness), Leg bolt or so-called Spanish shoes, Leg after removing the bolt. Intriguing placed on plate 65 in the section "Criminals" Group of cobblers, next to which is printed "(Do nothing)".
The second guide included: Skull of an African tiger (next to Kalmyk's Skull), Mammoth hind bone, Monstrous sea crawfish, Osprey skull, Shoes of a Chinese Mandarin, Street scene or fight between a cobbler and a chimney sweep, Negro playing the flute, Copy of a dried man, Two stomachs of drunks, Upper body part of a young man who died of dryness, Sexual parts of a virgin.
And funny, and scary. And rare.
