Grzegorz Knapiusz, Knapski (1564 - 1638) - Polish Jesuit, philologist, lexicographer, paremiographer, poet and playwright.
Polish lexicography in the early 17th century was in a rather deplorable state. Meanwhile, the demand for a dictionary with the Polish side coming to the fore was great, first of all in schools, but also among the entire enlightened stratum of the time. This public demand was satisfied by Gregory Knapius, who compiled a large three-volume Polish-Latin-Greek dictionary. Particularly noteworthy is the third part of the dictionary - "Adagia Polonica", in which the author included a collection of Polish expressions, proverbs and phrases along with Latin and Greek translations.Although the third volume Knapius wrote along the lines of the humanistic works of Erasmus of Rotterdam and other European authors, but on Polish soil it was the first such work.Published for the first and only time in 1632 in Cracow, "Adagia Polonica" is now a rather rare print, since part of the edition was destroyed by students of the Cracow Academy who were in conflict with the Jesuits. The work is an extremely valuable resource for modern researchers. In addition to linguistic research, the quotations from the writings of ancient authors contained in the collection provide a basis for research on rhetorical culture in the former Republic, more specifically, on various aspects of the functioning of references to ancient authors (after T. Nastulczyk: "Classical proverbs as an element of seventeenth-century rhetorical culture. From studies of the collection of Adagia Polonica by Gregory Knapius"; J. Puzynina: Thesaurus by G. Knapiusz, a seventeenth-century workshop on language)
