The subject of the Last Judgment is among the great themes of Christian iconography. The richness of this theme in the Middle Ages, which results from the other iconographic themes attached to it, poses a serious challenge to the researcher. (...) The author has tried to explain the multifaceted depictions of the Last Judgment on the basis of rich source material, not limiting himself only to the Bible, but reaching out to apocryphal texts and medieval authors, sermon texts, copies, mysteries and even Dante's Divine Comedy.
The iconography of the Last Judgment in monuments located in Central Europe, i.e. Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, has not yet been elaborated, and has only exceptionally been dealt with on the basis of Austrian monuments. The work of Fr. Dr. Klis fills this research gap and will become an important source of information.
