The book is the author's attempt to defend himself against allegations that he was a paid confidante of the Austrian police. In the absence of conclusive evidence, Kaczkowski was finally cleared of the charges. The case was finally cleared up in 1920, by Dr. Eugeniusz Barwinski. As S. Cenckiewicz:
"After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Dr. Eugeniusz Barwinski went on an archival search to Vienna. The files of Austrian police confidants fell into his hands, and among them was a bulky folder of an agent with the pseudonym "Heubauer" and 230 pages of his reports. "Heubauer" was Zygmunt Kaczkowski - an agent of Austrian intelligence, who between 1863 and 1871 filed ponderous and detailed denunciations, for which he received no small amount of money. His activities led to the breakdown of the Galician conspiracy organization, which resulted in a wave of arrests. The January Uprising thus lost its ability to gain a foothold in Galician society.
In 1920 Barwinski's book Zygmunt Kaczkowski in the Light of Truth (1863-1871) was published. From the secret acts of the former Austrian Ministry of Policy. Free Poland erased Kaczkowski from the canon of national literature. The courage of the historian and the truth triumphed over the lies and hypocrisy of fictional heroes." [Lit.: Agent Heubauer.
