"When designing covers for the Library of Novelties, Chejfec competed for the palm of primacy with Zygmunt Jurkowski, born in 1904 in Stavishch, Ukraine, who was the only one of the artists featured here to make his debut only in the early 1930s, at a time when the Avant-Garde even in Poland had the heroic stage of struggle already behind it. This bohemian painter and writer, a student of Tadeusz Pruszkowski from 1925 to 1929,earned a lavishly liquored-up life with his covers. He "produced" them almost on a conveyor belt, often one a week, most often for wagon novels, published by Stanislaw Cukrowski in series: "Publishing Novels" and "Interesting Books"; but he also drew covers for "Swarm," especially at the beginning of his career."
