Two-page print. This massive work, dedicated to Joachim Lelewel, is one of the most important and carefully compiled encyclopedias on Polish history. It contains hundreds of articles dealing with various fields of knowledge, such as material culture, weights and measures, flora and fauna, mythology and, above all, legal and political issues, with a special focus on historical geography, presenting several hundred monographic entries describing villages and towns in the Republic. The encyclopedia also provides information on important historical events, famous and distinguished Poles, noble institutions and traditions, and national culture. It contains both short, concise entries and extensive, multi-page studies. Although some entries are signed with the authors' monograms, most remain anonymous. However, the signature "J. M." is often repeated, especially under extensive historical studies, which testifies to the significant scientific contribution of the author and editor of this work - Jędrzej Moraczewski, also known as Host Jędrzej, who was a historian representing the Lelewel school of history, a publicist and an active social activist. Moraczewski took part in the November Uprising and was a member of the National Committee during the Greater Poland Uprising of 1848. In 1841-1842, as part of an initiative to establish a Polish university in Poznan, he taught Polish history at the Dzialynski Palace. |
