Pawel Jasienica is best known for his synthesis of the history of pre-partition Poland (Poland of the Piasts, Poland of the Jagiellons, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), in which he presented views at odds with those of most of his contemporary historians. He was accused of having a so-called personalist understanding of history, contrary to the top-down Marxist historiosophy that was imposed and in force at the time.
