An outstanding, iconic philosophical work treating the education of the perfect man.
We place in the hands of the Reader the first full Polish translation of Paideia. Deciding to accommodate such a voluminous work in a single volume, the publisher repeated the layout of the second one-volume German edition from 1989. The present edition included: 1. Two volumes of Paideia translated by Marian Plezi, published by the Pax Publishing Institute (the first, covering books one and two in 1962, the second, covering chapters I-X [up to the subsection Paideia of the rulers: a divine model] of book three, in 1964). The main text of this translation remained essentially unchanged (only typographical errors were removed, minor stylistic corrections were made, and the spelling of proper names was standardized). However, the footnotes were supplemented and corrected wherever possible. 2. translated by Marian Plezia and left in typewritten form (the translation work was interrupted by the death of the eminent philologist) chapters X (from the subsection Paideia of rulers: a divine model) to XIII and from XVII to XIX (to p. 1158) and footnotes to chapters XI-XII. 3. chapters XIV-XVI, XIX (from p. 1158) and XX and footnotes to chapters XIII-XX translated by Henryk Bednarek. Since Marian Plezia used, as he mentions in the translator's preface to Volume I, both German and English bases, while Henryk Bednarek used only the English base, the English base was used in the editing of the hitherto unpublished text. This edition adds prefaces to the first and second German editions of Volume I, a preface to the second English edition of Volume I, and a preface to the first English edition of Volume HI. In addition, the footnotes have been supplemented and cleaned up, and the spelling of proper names has been standardized. In doing so, the publisher decided to write Greek names in a form similar to Greek, omitting the Latin intermediary.
