The presented book is a kind of numismatic compendium on the history and numismatics of the Duchy of Oleśnica, aimed at enthusiasts of Silesian numismatics.
The book, which is divided into two chapters, catalogs almost 700 types of varieties of coins and medals of the dukes of Oleśnica The first chapter covers the years 1498-1648 and deals with coins minted by the Podiebrads in the mints of the Ziębice-Oleśnica duchy in Wolów, Zloty Stok, Oleśnica. The second covers the period of the reign of the Württemberg branch of the dukes of Oleśnica, 1649-1792, and describes coins minted at the mints in Oleśnica and Bierutow and also from the period when Charles Frederick was guardian of the minor Prince Charles Eugene and minted coins at the local mint with his likeness. The photos of the cataloged numismatic coins have been arranged chronologically according to the dates of their issuance and the order of the reign of each prince. Each photo was accompanied by a description of the obverse and reverse sides. The degree of rarity of the coins was determined on the basis of more than
25 years of observation of numismatic auctions, as well as the frequency of appearance of a given coin on sale . Work on the book took more than 5 years. The author conducted a very extensive search in many museums of Poland. Czech Republic. Germany and Austria. searching for those institutions that had in their collections numismatic coins of the dukes of the Duchy of Oleśnica.
Among the numismatic items of the mints of the Duchy of Oleśnica, medals made by the magnificent Bierut engraver Johann Neidhardt are particularly impressive. This brilliant engraver came to Bierutow from Nuremberg at the invitation of Duke Christian Ulrich, and thanks to the medals he created he became the chronicler of the material record of the history of the Duchy of Oleśnica during the reign of the dukes of the Oleśnica Wirtemberg dynasty. All the medals made by this medalist for the dukes of Oleśnica are included in this study.
The author straightens out many misinterpretations (which he encountered in museums as well as publications),regarding the intentions (occasions) of some medals.
